Becoming a Physician Assistant (PA) involves a rigorous multi-year educational and clinical training path. The process typically takes seven to eight years from the start of undergraduate studies to full licensure.
1. Undergraduate Preparation
To apply to PA school, candidates must first complete a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
-
Major: There is no specific required major, but successful applicants often focus on science-heavy fields like biology, chemistry, or health sciences.
-
Core Prerequisites: Most programs require specific coursework, including:
-
Sciences: Anatomy & Physiology (with labs), Microbiology, General and Organic Chemistry, and Biochemistry.
-
Mathematics: Statistics and sometimes Calculus.
-
Behavioral Sciences: General Psychology and Sociology.
-
-
GPA Standards: A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 is standard, though competitive applicants often have a 3.5 or higher.
2. Healthcare Experience (PCE/HCE)
Before applying, prospective students must gain significant hands-on patient care experience.
-
Hours Required: Programs typically require between 500 and 2,000 hours, though the national average for admitted students is often between 2,500 and 4,000 hours.
-
Common Roles: Applicants often work as EMTs, Paramedics, Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs), Medical Assistants, or Phlebotomists.
3. Accredited PA Program (Master's Level)
Once admitted, students attend a program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA). These programs typically last 24 to 27 months and are divided into two main phases:
-
Didactic Phase (Year 1): Intensive classroom and laboratory instruction in subjects such as pathophysiology, pharmacology, clinical medicine, physical diagnosis, and medical ethics.
-
Clinical Phase (Year 2): Students complete over 2,000 hours of clinical rotations in various medical specialties, including internal medicine, family medicine, emergency medicine, pediatrics, and general surgery.
4. Certification and Licensing
After graduating from an accredited program, candidates must complete national and state requirements:
-
PANCE Exam: Graduates must pass the Physician Assistant National Certifying Exam (PANCE), a 300-question test administered by the NCCPA. Passing this earns the "PA-C" (Physician Assistant-Certified) designation.
-
State Licensure: Every state requires a license to practice. This involves providing proof of PANCE certification, transcripts from an accredited program, and often a background check.
-
Continuing Education: To maintain certification, PAs must complete 100 hours of Continuing Medical Education (CME) every two years and pass a recertification exam (the PANRE) every 10 years.
Comparison to Medical School
While PA education is modeled on the medical school curriculum, it is shorter and focuses on general medicine rather than a specific residency. This allows PAs to enter the workforce faster—typically after three academic years of graduate study—and provides the flexibility to switch between medical specialties throughout their careers.
